Samuel G. Councilman
Samuel G. Councilman obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics, specializing in Riemann Surfaces from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Councilman was Chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department at CSULB for ten years during his time as faculty from 1968 – 2007. Throughout his time with the department, he served on various faculty committees in addition to representing the Mathematics & Statistics Department in the Faculty Senate.
While at CSULB, Dr. Councilman saw a need to provide financial assistance to students who showed a potential for growth and achievement in the field of Mathematics. As a result, Dr. Councilman chose to give back to the institution where he spent the majority of his professional career and established the Samuel Councilman Scholarship. Impact
The Samuel Councilman Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics students in need of financial assistance and recognized by the Mathematics faculty as having potential to succeed in the field of Mathematics.
