Raphael Hanson
The Raphael Hanson Endowed Student Award for Outstanding Scholarly Potential and Achievement was established to honor a respected member of the Psychology faculty. After receiving his doctoral degree from UC Berkeley in Statistics, Dr. Raphael Hanson joined the CSULB faculty in 1961 as a founding member of the Psychology Department. His research emphasized statistical rigor in the social sciences. He was highly admired as a teacher and mentor. He cared deeply about all aspects of education. Raphael read widely and loved tennis both as a player and as a fan. He generously mentored junior faculty in the ways of the university and often on the tennis court.
He served as Department Chair from 1975 – 1979, and retired as a Professor in 1987.
The Raphael Hanson Endowed Student Award for Outstanding Scholarly Potential and Achievement is awarded to CSULB Psychology students in the first semester of their senior year who demonstrate outstanding scholarly and/or research accomplishments. This scholarship was established in 2013 through a generous contribution by John and Phyllis Jung.
