Former Dean James L. Jensen began his academic career at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, where he received numerous scholarships in recognition of his academic promise. Following graduation, he received an MS in Chemistry at UC Santa Barbara, and went on to get his PhD at the University of Washington.

Dr. Jensen joined the department of Chemistry in 1968, and as a faculty member, he handled large freshman chemistry sections as well as specialized graduate courses with equal enthusiasm. His graduate students were a special part of his academic family and received rigorous training, professional guidance and placement.

When he was appointed Dean of the College, he was tireless in his efforts to help students become professionals and for faculty to improve upon their professionalism. The James L. Jensen Student Access to Science and Mathematics (SAS) Center was named in Dr. Jensen’s honor. The center serves to support, prepare, and advance the education of students in all fields of science and mathematics through active participation in research, scholarship, and co-curricular activities.

The College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics expresses gratitude to all scholarship donors who continue to enhance the quality of education students experience at CNSM.
